Chapter Sixteen
There was nowhere to go. Step back, and heâd hit the barrier of the sink. Step forward, and her soft curves would press against him, making him achingly aware of the way her breasts pillowed against his chest. Her hips were flush against him as she rose on her tiptoes to meet his hold when he straightened. As though nature moulded her just for him. So close until there was nothing but their clothes between them. Surely he imagined the heat of her body against his.
âKeep your chin up.â
Her directive recaptured his attention. She wriggled in his grasp as she bent her arm to bring his hand back to beneath her shoulder blade from where heâd let it drop to the curve of her waist. Then she gasped at the movement and gritted her teeth. Too late, he remembered her bruises.
âWhat about your shoulder?â he said. âI donât want to hurt you.â
He moved his hand so there was air between their bodies again. To give himself a moment of clarity. Of control. Ash was having none of that. She stepped into the hold, once more placing his hand high on her back.
âItâs just a bruise. Iâm fine. For heavenâs sake, McClane, smile. You have to at least look like youâre enjoying yourself. Pretend youâre having fun. Act like you want to dance with me.â
Heaven help him, he wanted to do a hell of a lot more than that.
He should move, shouldnât he? Take a step forward. Give his mind and his body something else to do besides concentrate on the sensations bombarding him as her physicality called to him. Remind himself he wasnât at some high school dance, or on one of those stupid dares he accepted when he lived on the streets. He shifted his weight.
Was it her hand that was clammy and hot? No, it was his.
âDonât move yet,â she said, her words little more than a reverent whisper. âJust listen to the music. Feel it rise and fall within you. Breathe in time with the beat. Let the notes take control. Let them lead.â
He could do that, couldnât he? But while breathing out was fine, breathing in meant pressing his chest against her breasts, noting that she breathed in time with him, which only enhanced the sensation. He glanced down. Ash was smiling. Her eyes were closed. Perhaps she was feeling the music, or maybe she wasnât even in this moment, and in her mind, she was somewhere else entirely. Maybe even with her ex-husband. His jaw tightened at the thought.
âI can feel you thinking, McClane.â
âWhat? Too much sway?â he said, his tone mocking.
âThereâs too much tension in your body. Weâre not about to face a firing squad or one of Senior Sergeant Wilsonâs famous lectures. Weâre about to dance. Relax. Breathe. Feel.â
She released his hand so she could place hers on his chest over his heart. If he wanted to pretend he couldnât feel the heat between them before, there was no hope of ignoring her palm branding his chest now.
